Tennis Australia Coach Development Course (Level 1)
Development Coach qualification
During this course participants learn to develop the skills of beginner tennis players of all ages. There is a major focus on planning, delivering and reflecting on coaching sessions and creating positive learning environments. The course covers technical and tactical tennis fundamentals, Tennis Hot Shots, Cardio Tennis, Tennis Xpress, the legal and ethical responsibilities of a coach, risk management, programme planning, tennis rules, personal development and using technology.
The Development Coach course is a Tennis Australia qualification. Tennis Australia’s courses are the only tennis coaching courses officially recognised by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
COURSE OVERVIEW
Module 1 – Coaching tennis
- Coach junior players in tennis
- Plan, conduct and review coaching programmes
- Meet participant coaching needs
- Continuously improve coaching skills and knowledge
- Work in a community coaching role
Module 2 – Responsibilities of the coach
- Organise personal work priorities and development
- Provide first aid
- Identify risk and apply risk management processes
- Participate in workplace health and safety
- Respond to interpersonal conflict

Minimum age:
17 years
Length:.
14 days over approx. 6 months. Course participants will have 12 months from the start date to complete all units and assessments.
Pre-requisites:
- Completed the Coaching Fundamentals short course and the Coaching Assistant Course
- Coaches should be coaching a minimum of 5-hours per week
- Coaches are required to have an NZ Police Vet, processed by Tennis NZ
- Have a Club Professional coach or equivalent as a supervisor
Course Fees and Payment Terms
The total course fee is $2,000 (excl. GST). This fee includes course materials and tuition.
A non-refundable deposit of $750 (excl. GST) is required to secure a place on the course. Course acceptance will not be confirmed until the deposit has been received. The deposit must be paid no later than two (2) weeks after course acceptance notification. Failure to pay the deposit by this deadline will result in the forfeiture of the applicant’s place on the course.
The remaining balance of $1250 (excl. GST) must be paid no later than two (2) weeks prior to the commencement of Block 3 of the course. Payment plans may be considered for the second instalment at the discretion of Tennis New Zealand. Any approved payment plan must be completed in full by the final week of Block 4 of the course. Failure to meet payment plan obligations may result in suspension or removal from the course, and may also incur additional penalty fees.
Refund Policy
Refunds are strictly limited.
A refund up to $750 (excl. GST) may be considered only in exceptional or critical circumstances, at the sole discretion of Tennis New Zealand. Supporting documentation may be required.
No refunds will be provided outside of these circumstances or once you have commenced the course. Tennis New Zealand incurs non-refundable costs in advance, including but not limited to court hire, coaching fees, and course delivery expenses. As such, cancellations result in a financial loss to the organisation.
Cancellations and Withdrawals
All requests for withdrawal must be submitted directly to the National Coach Development Manager ([email protected]).
All withdrawals are subject to the Refund Policy outlined above.
Career outcomes:
These coaches are recognised as qualified coaches and hold an international qualification.
Development Coaches are responsible for planning and delivering Tennis Hot Shots, Cardio Tennis, Tennis Xpress and programmes for players.
Development Coaches hold coaching roles at clubs, often working alongside a Club Professional qualified Head Coach.
