Daniell survives but Venus loses at Wimbledon

Thursday, 01 July 2021

There has been mixed news for the Kiwis in action at Wimbledon overnight. 12th seeds Michael Venus and German partner Tim Puetz have lost an epic battle against Australian’s Matt Ebden and JP Smith.

They will be rueing one that got away after Venus served for the match in the second set but got broken. Smith and Ebden eventually won 1-6 7-6 (4) 13-11 in 2 hours 52. Puetz also served for the match in the third set but was broken. Venus still has the Mixed Doubles at Wimbledon but this loss will clearly hurt the Kiwi number one.

Better news for Marcus Daniell and his Austrian partner Philipp Oswald who are through to the second round. They’ve beaten the wildcard pair of Britain’s Jay Clarke and Romania’s Marius Copil

6-3,3-6, 6-3 in one hour 44.
