Experienced New Zealand Davis Cup Side to Take on Uruguay

Tuesday, 15 February 2022

New Zealand will call on the experience of a combined 105 rubbers as the Davis Cup team seek to defeat Uruguay in Las Vegas on 4 & 5 March (5 and 6 March NZT).   This will be new captain Kelly Evernden’s first tie leading the side.

The side will feature double’s specialists Mike Venus and Artem Sitak alongside veteran singles player Rubin Statham and the returning Ajeet Rai, who last played for New Zealand in March 2020. The World Group 1 Play-Off event is a designated New Zealand home tie but is being played in the US for the second successive time due to NZ border restrictions, this time in Las Vegas.

Venus’s Olympic bronze medal winning partner Marcus Daniell is taking a break home in New Zealand for the first time in two years and was unavailable.

“I am excited at being involved in my favourite tennis event, the Davis Cup. The team selected is a mix of old and new, experience and enthusiasm. We are a good team with positive energy and great possibility.” Said Evernden.

Play will begin at 2pm daily on March 5th and the 6th NZT with two singles rubbers on day 1 and doubles, followed by reverse singles on day 2. The winner of the tie will play in World Group 1 in September, with the loser dropping to World Group 2.
