Ivanov scores impressive win in California

Valentina Ivanov has beaten a former top 30 player in the first round of qualifying at an ITF US $60,000 tournament in Berkeley in California this morning.

Ivanov has beaten Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko 7-5, 7-6 (3) in an hour and 47 minutes.

Bondarenko ranked 443 reached a career-high of 29 in 2009. Ivanov is ranked 1128.

Meanwhile Erin Routliffe and her Polish partner Alicja Rosolska have been beaten in the first round of the doubles at the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo. They have lost 7-5 6-3 to third seeds Desirae Krawczyk and Demi Schuurs.

Michael Venus moved from the Davis Cup tie in Finland to the ATP 250 tournament in Metz in France. Venus and his German partner Tim Puetz are the top seeds and will face French wildcards Gregoire Barrere and Quentin Halys in the first round.
