Michael Venus And Yuki Brambri's Incredible US Open Ends in Three Set Thriller

Thursday, 04 September 2025

Michael Venus and partner Yuki Brambri lost their hard-fought semi-final at the US Open this morning (NZT).

They lost to the British duo Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski 6-7(2) 7-6(5) 6-4 In the semi-finals.

Salisbury was broken when serving at 3-4 in the first set. It gave Venus the opportunity to serve for the opening set in the next game.

However when facing a break point he double faulted and the set ended up going to a tiebreak.

Venus and Bhambri weren’t going to make that earlier misstep a costly one, as they were in total control of the tiebreak and they clinched the set with a serve out wide from Venus that Salisbury couldn’t get back.

Salisbury was broken in the opening game of the second set, and all the momentum looked to be with the Kiwi/Indian combo. But Bhambri was broken when serving at 2-3, and once more the set ended going to a tiebreak.

At the first change of ends the scores were locked at 3-3, but at 4-5 Bhambri went long with a forehand he tried to steer down the line.

The first set point was saved, but Skupski served the next and he put a big one down the line which Bhambri was unable to return.

Bhambri received a medical time out for an issue with his left foot before the third set began.

Skupski kept pressure on with big returns in the opening service game of the third, and immediately broke Venus' serve, then held for a 2-0 lead.

Serving at 1-3, 15-40 down, Venus came up with three unreturned 1st serves to dig out of the game and keep it just a single break a part.

However the British pair held tight, eventually serving the final game to love, needing just the single break at the start of the set.

Although disappointed, prior to this Venus hadn't made it out of the third round at the US Open, while Bhambri hadn't made it to a Grand Slam semi-final before.

However there is still a Kiwi in a final at the US Open, Erin Routliffe and Gaby Dabrowski’s women’s doubles final against Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova is scheduled to start at 4am on Saturday NZ time on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
