Mike Venus and Bianca Andreescu into the mixed doubles finals at Roland Garros

Wednesday, 07 June 2023

New Zealand’s Michael Venus and Canada’s Bianca Andreescu are into the final of the Mixed Doubles at the French Open, after fending off Nathaniel Lammons of the USA and Gabriella Dabrowski of Canada in a tight 7-6, 7-6 semi-final.

The final will take place on centre court Philippe-Chatrier tonight at 10pm NZT. Andreescu and Venus will take on Japan’s Miya Kato and Venus’ former doubles partner Tim Puetz of Germany, for the title.

The Kiwi-Canadian combo, who only entered the draw as alternates, have had a dream run through the event, winning a succession of tight matches on their road to the final. Last night’s performance against Dabrowski and Lammons again showed the grit of the pair, pulling off two tie-break wins to close out the match in two sets. Speaking to Canadian media after the match, Venus and Andreescu credited the positive energy they have on court as duo as a key reason for their success in tight situations.

For Venus it is his first trip back to a Grand Slam final since the 2019 US Open, where he finished runner-up in Mixed Doubles with Chan Hao-Ching of Taiwan. Venus has one French Open title to his name, taking out the Men’s Doubles in 2017 with American partner Ryan Harrison. Andreescu also makes her first return to a Grand Slam final since 2019, when she dispatched Serena Williams for the US Open women’s singles title.
