Mixed news for Kiwi doubles players in Melbourne

Marcus Daniell and his Austrian partner Philip Oswald have made an impressive start to their campaign in Melbourne. They have beaten the French pair of Adrian Mannarino and Giles Simon 6-4 6-2 in 1 hour and 3 minutes in the last match of the day on court 16.

Daniell and Oswald were dominant on serve and converted three of their five break point chances while they didn’t face a break point against them. They go on to face a pair of unseeded singles specialists in the form of American Tennys Sandgren (a former ASB Classic champion) and Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

Fellow Kiwi Artem Sitak and his British partner Jonny O’Mara have been beaten 6-4 6-4 by the 5th seeds Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury It was a tight match but a break in each set was enough for the American British combination.

New Zealand’s top ranked doubles player Michael Venus and his Australian partner John Peers are back on court on Friday for their second-round match against Korean wildcards Min-Kyu Song and Ji Sung Nam for a place in the third round for the second straight year. The pair of 30-year-old Koreans are both ranked outside the top 100 but upset Kiwi born Ben McLachlan who represents Japan and India’s Rohan Bopanna in the first round.
