Mixed results for Kiwis at Cincinnati Masters

Wednesday, 18 August 2021

Michael Venus is through to the second round of the doubles at the Cincinnati Masters but Marcus Daniell is out. Venus and his German partner Tim Puetz have beaten the 7th seeds, Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo 6-2 6-3 in an impressive display. They will face the Dutch/German pair of Wesley Koolhof and Jan Lennard Struff in the second round.

Marcus Daniell and his Canadian partner Felix Augier-Aliassime have lost 7-5 7-5 to American’s Austin Krajicek and Steve Johnson. It was an incredibly tight match, but Daniell was broken in the 12th game of each set to lose the match.

Daniell now heads to Winston Salem for next week’s ATP tournament where he is teaming up with former partner Marcelo Demoliner but at this stage, they are the third alternates so may not get in the main draw. Daniell and Demoliner will play together at the US Open.
