Three set doubles loss for Vivian Yang at Australian Open Juniors

Sunday, 22 January 2023

A nice comeback in the first set, but a win alluded Vivian Yang and partner Weronika Ewald (Poland) in the Australian Open Junior doubles first round.

They were beaten 7-6(2), 3-6, 10-7 by Cara Maria Mester (Romania) and Sonja Zhiyenbayeva (Germany) in sometimes blustery conditions on court five.

Yang and Ewald were down 0-3 and 1-4 in the first set, but showed great resolve to fight back. At 3-4 down Yang served a great game to level the score.

It was then in a tiebreak they dominated their opponents taking the set 7 points to 2 in 42 minutes overall.

However in the second set they had a couple of breaks against their serves and struggled for consistency.

In the match tiebreak Mester and Zhiyenbayeva moved out to a 7-3 lead, but Yang and Ewald weren't going to give up that easy and clawed their way back to 6-8.

Unfortunately for Yang and Ewald their opponents seemed in the zone and hit four winners in the tiebreak to eventually take the match in a time of 1 hour 26 minutes.

Yang and Ewald will now face each other in the second round of singles on Tuesday.
