Venus and Peers stunned in second round at French Open

Friday, 02 October 2020

Michael Venus and his Australian partner John Peers have suffered a shock second round defeat at the French Open in Paris. They’ve been beaten in straight sets 7-6 (3) 6-3 by Denmark’s Freddie Nielsen and Germany’s Tim Puetz.

Venus the 2017 men’s double champion with American Ryan Harrison, and Peers were the 11th seeds and in a rich vein of form having won the European Open title in Hamburg last Monday.

But against Nielsen and Puetz, Venus and Peers came up short. They had beaten them in the first round of the Australian Open in January but struggled on the Parisian red clay.

It was a tight opening set with no breaks of serve and Puetz and Nielsen prevailed in a tie break. Venus dropped serve in the fourth game of the set and despite having Nielsen under pressure in his next service game Venus and Peers were unable to break and get back into the match. Puetz served for the match at 5-3 and saved four break points before serving out the match and securing a place in the third round.

Venus and Peers will lament a failure to convert any of their seven break point chances in the match.
