Venus, Mektic secure ASB Classic final berth

Michael Venus and Nikola Mektic proved their adaptability and resolve to overcome Albano Olivetti and Yuki Bhambri 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 in the semifinals of the ASB Classic.
The duo, newly paired this season, were spurred on by local tennis fans to earn a spot in Saturday’s final.
“We were the better team in the first set,” admitted Mektic. “But doubles can be unforgiving. A few unlucky points, missed break opportunities, and some of my mistakes turned things against us.
“The wind was much stronger than in previous matches, which needed adjustment. But we raised our level when it mattered and deserved to win.”
The second set saw an improvement from Venus and Mektic, as they found their rhythm and nailed their break points.
In the decisive super tiebreak, their experience and newly-found chemistry shone through.
For Venus, the victory reflected the pair’s growing understanding as a team.
“After every match, we talk about what worked and what didn’t,” he said.
“It changes depending on the conditions and who we’re playing, but we focus on what we’re doing well and where we can improve. We’re clear on our goals—it’s just about going out there and executing.”
This clarity has been crucial during a period of three matches in three days, allowing Venus and Mektic to sharpen their strategy.
The Venus-Mektic partnership came together late last year, sparked by simultaneous texts that demonstrated mutual interest. Venus had split with Neal Skupski, while Mektic’s partner, Wesley Koolhof decided to hang up his racquet.
“We talked after the US Open,” Mektic said. “We’re a similar age and have been on the circuit for a long time, but there’d never been a chance to play together.
"My partner was retiring, and I planned to message Michael first thing in the morning. When I woke up, his message was already there. It felt meant to be.”
Since getting together the pair has focused on building their on-court dynamic, and their run to the ASB Classic final is an early sign of success.
Venus and Mektic will now turn their attention to Saturday’s final against Christian Harrison and Rajeev Ram. Despite the pressure of playing on home soil, Venus remains grounded.
“We know what we’re trying to execute as a team,” he said. “It’s about getting into the right mindset and being ready to go.”
The doubles final starts at 11.30am on Saturday.
