Wimbledon run in men's doubles ends at semifinals for Venus

Thursday, 11 July 2024

Michael Venus and Neal Skupski have lost in their gentlemen’s doubles semifinal at Wimbledon, going down 6-4 7-6(1) to Harri Heliovaara from Finland and Britain’s Henry Patten.

Venus and Skupski had won 12 matches in a row going into this semifinal, played in front of a big crowd on No 1 Court, but unfortunately, the streak ended there as the Kiwi/ British duo weren’t able to break their opponent’s serve through the match.

The first set came down to Venus being broken in the opening game, and then after a tight battle in the second set, it went to a tiebreaker.

In it, Skupski and Venus went down a mini break on the first point, which Skupski served, as Venus was unable to keep in a tricky volley at the net when at full stretch.

Venus double-faulted a few points later to make it 4-0 and at the change of ends, they were down 5-1.

At 6-1, Heliovaara ripped a backhand return off Skupski’s serve, so the match, and the winning streak was over.

However, it was a great grass-court season for Venus as for the first time in his professional career he won 12 matches on the bounce.

His plan is to head to America next for the upcoming tournaments in Atalanta and Washington.
