Wāhine (Womens) Coaching Scholarship 2021
Tennis NZ is excited to announce it's first Wāhine Coaching Scholarship.

Tennis NZ is committed to increasing the number and capability of female tennis coaches and to influence a change in perception of the capability of female coaches in Aotearoa.  To achieve this aim, Tennis NZ is providing an opportunity for female coaches to access a scholarship to support their completion of the Tennis NZ Junior Development Coach qualification.

Background
In mid-2019, Tennis NZ ran a survey in conjunction with High Performance Sport NZ, gathering 91 responses from women who are coaching, or have previously coached tennis in NZ. In January 2020 Tennis NZ held a Women in Coaching Hui with Judy Murray, Emma Doyle and Simone Spencer (Aktive Portfolio Manager – Women & Girls, Coach Development, Good Sports®) to dive deeper on the survey responses. From the survey and Hui research, we began the development of a Women in Coaching Strategy. The Wāhine Coaching Scholarship is one of the projects implemented from these discussions and contributions from the Wāhine Coaching Community.

“Girls who have female coaches have the opportunity to see that ‘if she can do this, then I can too.”

Men are important too!
It’s really important that men are involved in and are supportive of this project. We look to male coaches, club reps, committee members, administrators, players and parents to act as champions for women and girls in tennis, and female coaches in the same way they would champion equality for their mothers, sisters, friends, wives, daughters and girlfriends. The whole of the tennis community can influence change as we take steps collectively to improve our environments. Male coaches are absolutely vital and in
championing and advocating for female tennis coaches in NZ to have the opportunities and support that is conducive to a happy career in the sport to become role models for young women and girls both on and off the tennis court.
