WTT Wellington: Three Kiwis progress to singles QF
Renee Zhang is having a fortnight to remember.
The 17-year-old was a wildcard entry to the ITF World Tennis Tour: Wellington pro event and is now the last New Zealand player standing in the women's singles.
She beat fourth seed Mio Mushika from Japan 6-4, 6-2 to progress to the quarter-finals, and will now face Mercedes Aristegui from Spain.
Zhang won the Wellington Open women's singles title last Saturday and a few days before that became the New Zealand under-18 national girls singles champion in Christchurch.
She also won the under-18 national girls doubles title with Maria Galatescu at the National Junior Championships last week.
Meanwhile, in the men’s singles, two New Zealanders have progressed to the quarters and both had to fight hard against fellow Kiwis.
George Stoupe lost the first set to top men’s seed Ajeet Rai before coming back and winning 4-6, 7-6, 7-5. He will now face Australian Jacob Bradshaw.
Corban Crowther also came back from a set down to inch past compatriot Isaac Becroft 4-6, 6-4, 7-6. He will play American Matt Kuhar in the quarters.
